Ways We Doubt

When Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and preach in their cities. Now when John heard in prison about the deeds of the Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or shall we look for another?"
Matthew 11:1-3

"Pull yourself up by your bootstraps."  I really don't know if this is possible, but I've heard it my whole life.  It is the means that should be taken first.  Don't ask for help.  Don't look to anyone other than yourself.  That is what the world says. Self-reliance is an essential quality in the United States.

What we fail to realize is that we are barefooted.  Our self-reliance is often an expression of our doubting.  Doubting His authority, power, and His ability to care for us and our needs.  In our doubt, we often develop our own source for peace, comforted, and joy outside of God, or we live in a state of anxiety; disregarding obedience to His Word.

Many times we recognize our doubt.  Our doubt ashames us.  "I'm a Christian!  How can I doubt?"  In this shame, we foolishly isolate ourselves from other believers.  This isolation, due to our guilt, prevents us from hearing the Word and the truth that treat the disease of doubt.  The illness of doubt left untreated brings us to the unfortunate and tragic place of doubting His very existence. Hardening our hearts and searing our minds.

How do we get to this place of doubt?  We think the problem lies with God but when we are the actual problem.  We don't remember the truth.  We don't seek the truth.  We forget the very essence of God; He IS Love (1 John 4:8).  He said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." (Hebrews 13:5)
